Title: Why Take a Gap Year?

Description: This presentation covers the ins and outs of a Gap Year and why students decide to take one. In addition, the presentation discusses responses of interviews from a variety of universities and their views of students who have taken Gap Years and the process of deferring university.

Title: Choosing a UK Degree: The Why & How (with Charline Appleby)
Description: An overview on the United Kingdom's Higher Education system and who might be best suited (from outside the UK) for a UK university education. In addition, the nuts and bolts of how to navigate the application system and some of the cultural aspects of the UK were also highlighted in this presentation.

Title: Transitioning Students with Specific Learning Issues to University

Description: Transitioning high school students to university is a challenge in and of itself. Transitioning high school students with specific learning issues adds another iron to the fire. What universities want from these students and how to get into their support program is one issue, how to work with students who are well qualified for university with additional issues (i.e.Aspergers, ADHD) adds more complex details to a student's profile. This workshop will explain a variety of options and programs to help these students transition to higher education.

Title: Kids in Crisis, Families in Need

Description: It is never the intent of an international school to ask a student to leave their school. Unfortunately, there are times when the school and student do not fit. As everyone knows, the reasons are numerous; ranging from specific learning issues to behavioral issues. While not an easy conversation to hold with parents, there are some viable options to share. Kids in Crisis and Families in Need will discuss options and and challenges in locating specific programs for these students.

Description: This presentation focused on the legal differences between high school and university support programs for students with specific learning disabilities. Areas of exploration included the importance of self advocacy, choosing the appropriate university, and proper documentation for accessing services.

Description: A Gap Year forum with the historical time line of the Gap Year, representatives from three Gap Year programs shared their goals and outcomes, a parent shared her point of view of her son's year away, the student shared his side of being away for a year and his deferral of university for that year, and finally, some input from a variety of universities from across the United States.
